The 17-16 final score had to be a frustrating one for Syracuse. The Orange (5-6, 3-4 ACC) not only lost a game where a win would have secured bowl eligibility, but they held Pittsburgh to 239 yards on offense and forced a pair of turnovers while not gifting the ball back.

Pitt head coach Paul Chryst called timeout as the Orange lined up for a 53-yard field goal with 1:08 left and the Orange down one. Syracuse had set up a trick play where a receiver was left uncovered, but the timeout was allowed to stand, and SU’s 4th and 8 attempt was batted away.

SU’s ability to pound the football will be tested against Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who was named a finalist for the Lombardi Award for college football’s best lineman or linebacker.
