Orange Watch: Syracuse needs to move to ACC ASAP

The faster the Big East and West Virginia settle their lawsuit with a monetary figure, the faster the Mountaineers are able to bolt to the Big 12 which they have already told the Big East in no uncertain terms that they intend to begin competing next year, with the domino effect that SU (and Pittsburgh) will know what the numbers are if they want to bolt prior to the 27 month period as stipulated in the league’s bylaws.

Why did the SU football team, which was sitting on top of the Big East World late on the evening of Oct. 21 following a 49-23 dismantling of Top 15 ranked West Virginia, implode with a fourth consecutive defeat, a disheartening 30-13 Senior Day loss to Cincinnati in the Dome on Saturday, to drop to 5-6 with a game left to play?

Syracuse bowl eligibility goes through Cincinnati Bearcats

Throw in the fact that bowl eligibility is no guarantee of an invitation, would that scenario come into play if a 6-6 Syracuse needs the Big East’s help in being placed outside the conference’s contractually-obligated bowl partnerships with Notre Dame (the Champs Sports Bowl’s once-in- four-years selection at 8-3 with a game at Stanford to play), Rutgers, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Louisville already seemingly accounting for 5 of the 6 league’s bowl tie-ins?

Orange Watch: Disappointment if Syracuse misses bowl

With the unconfirmed (as of early Friday) suspension of defensive standout Phillip Thomas for perhaps the final two games, and offensive struggles reminiscent of last November’s swoon, it’s time for Marrone, his staff, and players to once again rally in a one-game setting that will go a long way towards defining the pulse of the program’s direction as it heads towards the bridge to the ACC.
