Real competition an acquired taste for Syracuse

I wanted to see Syracuse play against better competition. I wanted to see how they would respond. Through the first four games, the Orange had an average margin of victory of 32.5 points. You don’t learn much about a team from wins like that against opponents like Colgate and Fordham. Virginia Tech was going to be a real test. And through the first half Syracuse did not respond well. But luckily they played the 2nd half and the Orange responded to pull out the 69-58 victory.

Southerland leads overwhelming Syracuse press

The sequence actually came within a longer one of just over a minute, where the Orange turned the Red Raiders over six times in a row. It began at the 8:51 mark when James Southerland picked off a kickout pass to the corner from Colgate’s Mike Venezia, who found himself swarmed with nowhere to go underneath the basket. Southerland finished the fast break the other way with an open jumper at the top of the key.

No more debate: Syracuse is New York’s team

Can we have a moratorium on the debate over whether Syracuse or St. John’s is “New York’s College Team?” At this point there is no debate. The crowd on Thursday afternoon might have been split 50/50 but the Redstorm faithful were tentative. They know they don’t own the Garden but were just renting it from the Orange.

Melo, Triche lead Syracuse over St. John’s

Melo scored a career-high 12 points, including several clutch baskets in the finals minutes, as No. 11 Syracuse advanced to the semifinals of the Big East tournament by defeating No. 18 St. John’s, 79-73. The Orange has now won six straight games dating back to a Feb. 14 win over West Virginia.
