Orange Watch: Continued upswing for Syracuse basketball in down year for ACC

So much for all that talk dating back as far as last summer’s official July 1 entrance date for Syracuse and Pittsburgh into the ACC, followed by all the gushing at the basketball media day activities in October proclaiming the ACC, with five schools sporting national championships and with three of the top five all-time victorious programs, having the potential to be the best basketball conference in all the land.

Syracuse Orange cruise past North Carolina 57-45

For eight minutes, it looked like North Carolina might get their fourth win over a top-five team on the season. After that, though, it was just another romp for #2 Syracuse, as they pulled away for a 57-45 home win that was not as close as the final score suggests.

Syracuse hosted North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. It was the first time these two teams played each other since the Orange defeated the Tar Heels 87-71 in 2009.

Other than the fresh five ACC games in the inaugural season for the 2014 Syracuse lacrosse team, in what will likely end up being an amazingly close and competitive margin from teams one through six, and besides the annual matchup with fellow modern era NCAA blueblood Johns Hopkins (the teams have met every season since 1985), the remaining seven games on the recently released 2014 lax schedule are against teams from New York State, six of which are within a 145 miles radius of the Carrier Dome.

Playing in the cavernous 71,054 seat home of the NFL’s Texans in the predicted lower scoring, defensive game, the Orange (7-6) led 7-3 at halftime on Jerome Smith’s 1 yard TD run early in the second quarter, keeping the Gophers (8-5) out of the end zone for a 12th straight quarter.

At halftime of Syracuse’s victory over High Point, the No. 2 Orange led 3-6 Panthers (ranked No. 258 in the KenPom rankings) by a mere three points. High Point had shot 6-12 from the beyond the arc, and immediately Tweets started pouring in claiming that if the Panthers could keep up this shooting then they would have a chance to pull off the upset.
