Syracuse rallied past Monmouth, 86-71, on Monday evening. Here are some quick hits from the game:

  • About the only real positive for the Syracuse defense in this game was that they did not foul much, committing only five infractions. Of course, they were not really defending well enough to be in position to foul very often. The shot chart for the game showed Monmouth making 14-of-17 shots classified as lay-ups. The SU defense was particularly egregious in the first half, as the Hawks had nine lay-ups on 11 attempts in that time.
  • The Orange, on the other hand, were 10-of-18 on lay-ups in the game (they did add three dunks).

  • Jesse Edwards should not be fifth on the team in field goal attempts against a low-major opponent unless he spends a lot of time on the bench because the game is a blowout. While getting fouled and attempting nine free throws lowered his field goal attempts, he still needs to be the focal point of the offense.
  • Maliq Brown did not get off the bench against Georgetown, but had 12 points and seven rebounds against Oakland and 11 points and seven boards against Monmouth. It looks like he may be starting to carve out a role as a bench option to help rebound and make things happen on simple, smart plays, be they little cuts to the rim or crashing the offensive boards for putbacks.
  • Judah Mintz was able to get pretty much anywhere he wanted in the second half. All five of his field goals after the break were in the paint with four coming inside the restricted area. Mintz also logged five assists against a single turnover, giving him 22 dimes against a pair of turnovers during the Orange’s four-game win streak.
  • Benny Williams’ second half was one of his better ones at SU. Williams had 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting, including a three- and a four-point-play, to go with three rebounds.

NEXT UP

The Orange return to action on Saturday when they host Cornell. The Big Red (7-2) had a seven-game win streak snapped on Wednesday when they were edged at Miami, 107-105. The game marked Cornell’s second loss to ACC opponents on the season, having lost their season opener at Boston College, 79-77.

The Big Red are second in the nation in three-pointers made per game at 11.9 and have five players who have made at least a dozen treys on the season. Top scorer Greg Dolan leads their balanced attack (seven players averaging over 18 minutes and 7.6 points per game) with 13.9 points per game and has shot 58.8 percent from three-point range.

Syracuse and Cornell will resume their regional rivalry at 3:00pm Eastern on Saturday with the ACC Network handling television responsibilities.
