Lots to talk about on our weekly recruiting roundup as we inch closer to the start of the 2021 college football season.

2022 DL Daniel Owens

We start with Syracuse’s efforts to reinforce its defensive line in the class of 2022. The Orange is among four finalists for Daniel Owens, a three-star prospect from Calvert (Md.) Hall College. Last week, Owens tweeted a final four of Syracuse, along with Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers. Interestingly enough, his 247 profile lists Syracuse, Maryland and Rutgers as “warm,” while Penn State is listed as “cool.”

“Thank you to all the coaches who have been recruiting me in this process so far,” Owens wrote on Twitter. “I am extremely grateful for all the opportunities and time you have given me.”

There’s no timetable yet for a decision, as Owens added a commitment would “come in due time.

2022 OL Joe Cruz and WR Donovan Brown

Meanwhile, two recent Syracuse commits have received their ratings from 247 Sports. When Joe Cruz and Donovan Brown committed to the Orange, neither was rated. But last week, the two both were rated three stars.

For Cruz, he is now ranked as the No. 6 New York prospect and the 128th OT in his class, with an .8399 rating.

Brown is even more impressive, with a .8543 rating, and is 899th overall in his class, and the 25th rated prospect out of Maryland. Syracuse continues to be Brown’s only high major offer, for now, and out of SU’s 10 commitments, Brown is the second highest recruit behind only NJ defensive lineman Q’yaeir Price.

That’s what I call finding two really good diamonds in the rough.

2022 guard Chance Westry

Over to the hardwood, for a period of time, Syracuse basketball was one of the schools that was favored for 2022 combo guard Chance Westry. While Syracuse was among Westry’s trimmed list of 10 schools, the Orange is no longer in the lead.

That could have to do with Quadir Copeland, another guard, committing to Syracuse. Regardless of the reason, LSU appears to be in the lead for his services now.

On Wednesday, two 247 Sports analysts put in Crystal Ball predictions for the Tigers. Director of Basketball Scouting Jerry Meyer had selected the Orange at one point, but that was back in February, 2020.
