Big East Power Rankings – Week 14
Louisville locks up a share of the Big East title and now waits for the rest of the conference schedule to play itself out. West Virginia and Cincinnati take one step closer to sharing that crown with the Cardinals, while Rutgers’ loss to Connecticut knocks them out of contention. Pittsburgh, Syracuse, South Florida and the Huskies all are one game away from bowl eligibility.
Syracuse’s once promising season crashes and burns
Why did the SU football team, which was sitting on top of the Big East World late on the evening of Oct. 21 following a 49-23 dismantling of Top 15 ranked West Virginia, implode with a fourth consecutive defeat, a disheartening 30-13 Senior Day loss to Cincinnati in the Dome on Saturday, to drop to 5-6 with a game left to play?
Syracuse struggles disconcerting, but end results not bad
Through the first 4 games of the season Syracuse dominated their competition. But with that competition being against the likes of Manhattan and Colgate it was difficult to draw any real conclusions. In the past two games they have struggled in the first half and then asserted themselves in the second and yet, it’s still difficult to draw any real conclusions about this team because it’s unclear how good their past two opponents are. Neither Virginia Tech nor Stanford is ranked but the polls are largely a joke this early in the season and the two teams are a perfect 9-0 outside of the losses to the Orange. In fact, Stanford was the only unbeaten team in the Pac-12 before last night.
Offense struggles again as Syracuse edges Stanford
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was not happy with his team’s offense for the second straight game, despite Syracuse defeating Stanford 69-63 at Madison Square Garden to win the NIT Season Tip-Off. It was hard to blame Boeheim as his team shot a meager 11-for-31 in the first half and went into the break trailing 25-24.
