Syracuse routed Oakland on Tuesday night, 95-66. Here are some quick hits from the game:

  • The Syracuse offense featured a lot of good passing that really got underway early a couple minutes into the action when Joe Girard III zipped a crosscourt pass over the Oakland zone for a Justin Taylor corner three, then Benny Williams made a touch pass so quick, it was more like a redirection to Jesse Edwards for a dunk.
  • In the first half, the Orange compiled 13 assists, which would have nearly been a season high for a full game this season, on 20 field goals and 27 assists overall against 13 turnovers (four committed by walk-ons). The Notre Dame and Oakland games are the first time SU posted consecutive games with at least a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover mark since victories over Miami and Virginia Tech on January 2021.

  • Much of the second half saw the Orange using a five-man unit of Symir Torrence, Benny Williams and two or three freshmen on the floor. The youngster who acquitted himself best in this span was Maliq Brown, who had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds in just over 15 minutes of play.
  • In early exhibition action, Quadir Copeland looked like he was going to have a significant role off the bench. In the time since then, Copeland has done one thing consistently in his limited action – try to do too much on the floor. Copeland finished 1-for-6 from the field, including a missed three, and turned the ball over twice trying for the highlight play.
  • Chris Bell had one rebound in 12:17 of court time, keeping his rebounding average at one board in over 20 minutes per game. Justin Taylor is up to 40 percent from three and had at least four rebounds for the fourth straight game and Brown has more than twice as many rebounds in just over one-third the minutes on the season. It would not be surprising for Bell to remain a starter in name only… or simply lose the job.
  • With six rebounds and three assists and the Orange outscoring Oakland 24-3 in the last 8:29 of the first half, John Bol Ajak’s not losing his role off the bench.

Syracuse and Georgetown will face off at 1:00pm Saturday with ABC handling television responsibilities.
