There’s plenty of recruiting news from the Syracuse world as we move into 2022, so let’s get right to it.

With only three scholarship quarterbacks currently on the roster, Syracuse coach Dino Babers said that the Orange would need to find more depth in the transfer portal. Now that quarterbacks coach Jason Beck is officially on board with the Orange, Syracuse has started to mine the portal, and offered Michigan transfer Dan Villari on Friday, he announced on Twitter.

The Plainedge (NY) native appeared in four games during the 2021 season, and recorded one pass and 35 rushing yards. Because of the COVID 2020 year and retaining his redshirt year in 2021, Villari would have four years of eligibility remaining. He was a three-star quarterback in the class of 2020 according to 247 Sports, and had offers from Fordham, Kent State and UMass out of high school.

Syracuse also continues to recruit in the class of 2022 ahead of the February signing period. According to Sports Illustrated’s Mike McAllister, SU will host Miami (FL) Edison defensive lineman Francois Nolton on the Jan. 14 weekend. The former Florida commit also holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Penn State, South Carolina, TCU, Tennessee, Texas A&M and USC, among others.

The Orange is also looking forward into the 2023 and 2024 classes. Syracuse safeties coach Nick Monroe was recruiting hard down in Florida, and offered the following prospects in the Sunshine state:

  • Jamari Howard, 2024 defensive back, Westland (Fla.) Hialeah. Syracuse is his first offer.
  • Romello Flowers, 2023 defensive back/wide receiver, Avant Garde (Fla.) Academy. Syracuse is his first offer.
  • Lawayne McCoy, 2024 defensive back/wide receiver, Avant Garde (Fla.) Academy. He also has an offer from URI.
  • Wayne Peart, 2023 defensive lineman, Chaminade-Madonna (Fla.) High. He also holds offers from Pitt and Penn State.
  • Dimitry Nicolas, 2024 defensive lineman, Opa Locka (Fla.). He also holds offers from Georgia, Texas A&M, Miami, and Oregon.

One other noteworthy offer was to Roderick Robinson, a 2023 linebacker from Lincoln (CA) High. He’s teammates with 2022 quarterback recruit Jalen Daniels. Robinson also holds offers from Cal, Oregon, Arizona and Colorado State, among others, and holds a three-star ranking from 247 Sports.

Two prospects in the transfer portal that Syracuse can cross off the list are graduate transfer offensive lineman JD DiRenzo and senior defensive lineman Jared Verse. The two were among the hottest prospects in the portal, but committed to Rutgers and Florida State, respectively.
