Syracuse Recruiting Roundup: Mehki Wall, Daniel Owens, Josaiah Stewart

Recruiting can slow down a bit once football season gets underway. Coaches are busy with practice, film study, and game planning for that week’s opponent. Recruiting is still part of the job, but there simply isn’t as much time to focus on recruits as there is in the offseason.

Fear not, for we here at The Juice Online have your recruiting needs covered.

Crystal Balls Lacking Shade of Orange

Mehki Wall is a wide receiver out of Greensboro, NC. The 3-star speedster has an impressive offer sheet that includes Coastal Carolina, Duke, Liberty, Louisville, UNC, NC State, Rutgers, Wake Forest, and West Virginia.

Wall tweeted over the weekend that he will make his decision on Oct. 14, but writers for both 247Sports and Rivals both think Wall will choose Duke.

Daniel Owens, a 3-star defensive lineman from Towson, MD, is another recruit who appears headed for non-orange pastures, if the writer predictions are right.

Syracuse is looking to build off last year’s class that included five defensive linemen: Jatius Geer, Terry Lockett, Elijah Fuentes-Cundiff, Chase Simmons, and Derek McDonald.

The Orange has commits from three more in this year’s class in Q’yaeir Price, Belizaire Bassette, and Malachi Davis.

Landing Owens would be the cherry on top of back-to-back solid DL classes as Syracuse looks to a position group that will lose McKinley Williams, Josh Black, Kingsley Jonathan, and Cody Roscoe to graduation. His 247Sports profile lists Syracuse, Maryland, and Rutgers as “warm.” However, early indications are that Owens is headed for Maryland.

One Who Got Away?

Speaking of defensive linemen, let’s look at a recruit who could fall into the “one who got away” category.”

Josaiah Stewart is a true freshman playing at Coastal Carolina.

The Everett, MA product originally committed to Steve Addazio and Boston College. When the Eagles called an audible on Addazio’s run-run-pass-punt offensive system in favor of Jeff Hafley, Stewart and the Eagles parted ways.

Stewart has played in two of Coastal’s three games this season. He hinted at his potential in a win against Kansas with seven tackles and three and a half sacks.

Whether the Orange ever offered Stewart is unclear. Rivals doesn’t list him having an offer while 247Sports does.

Basketball News

A quick update a two names Syracuse fans are quite familiar with.

Kyle Filipowski was recently elevated to 5-star status by 247Sports. The Duke commit is now the eighth-ranked player in the Class of 2022.

Chance Westry once seemed destined to wear Orange. Then LSU appeared to be in the driver’s seat. Now Auburn might be the frontrunner. Dushawn London recently logged a Crystal Ball pick for the Tigers. Auburn is the only school listed as “warm” on the 4-star recruit’s 247Sports profile.

The Class of 2022 isn’t the only group the Orange staff is focused on.

Syracuse paid a visit to Class of 2023 Simeon Wilcher of Roselle, NJ yesterday. The 5-star combo guard’s offer list includes Auburn, UConn, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio State and Oregon.
