Scouting the Blue Demons

This section would normally be filled with information about freshman forward Cleveland Melvin, who leads DePaul in scoring at 14.3 points per game on 52 percent shooting. But he will be out for the rest of the year after he sprained his left thumb in a 76-51 loss to St. John’s on Feb. 23.

Big lineup will play more often

During Saturday’s 58-51 victory against Georgetown, the two combined for 20 minutes of action. Keita had one rebound in 13 minutes of play, while Melo had a rebound and two points on an alley-oop from Scoop Jardine in transition. It was the first time that Melo played more than five minutes since Syracuse’s 72-49 win against South Florida on Feb. 9. It may be a sign of things to come as Syracuse heads into championship season.

Southerland makes major contribution

The last time James Southerland played more than 20 minutes was more than a month ago, when Syracuse lost to Pittsburgh 74-66 on Jan. 17. You have to go back even further to find the time Southerland last scored more than eight points. That was on Jan. 1 when the Orange topped Notre Dame 70-58. Southerland saw both of those streaks end Saturday in the Orange’s 58-51 win over Georgetown. Southerland played 21 key minutes for Syracuse and scored nine points.
