Kris Joseph scored a career-high 27 points, and Rick Jackson narrowly missed his 10th double-double with nine points and 17 rebounds as Syracuse held off the pesky Providence Friars 81-74 in the Big East opener for both teams.

Kris Joseph scored a career high 25 points and Rick Jackson recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds as Syracuse finished its non-conference schedule with a convincing 93-65 win over Drexel.

Joseph struggled in the early season, scoring just 10 points against Canisius and three points against Detroit. After a 3-for-12 shooting performance against N.C. State, head coach Jim Boeheim noted that Joseph looked like he was “auditioning for something” and demanded more of his rising star.

Joseph takes on new role

Last season, as a sophomore, Joseph started to live up to the potential others saw, averaging nearly 11 points a game, third-best on the team. As Coach Jim Boeheim’s first reserve off the bench, Joseph was a key member of an SU team that went 30-5, achieved the number one spot atop the basketball polls and was an Arinze Onuaku injury away from possibly claiming a national championship.
