Best of What's Around – SU 72, MSU 58

  • Syracuse 72 – Michigan State 58: Alright, Well, I Guess We Are Good After All, Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician: We just beat a top ten team away from the Carrier Dome. Just sayin’. Yes, the “it was MSG” caveats are already starting and Dick Vitale and his buddy were oh so kind to wait until the Orange had the game in the bag to pull out the “Syracuse doesn’t play outside NY/NJ until mid-January” card, as if Syracuse’s win needed to be qualified.
  • Syracuse – Michigan State: Sad Tom Izzo Observations, Three Idiots on Sports: Well, well, well. It seems the the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team was sleep walking through their first eight games of the season because in game number 9 — against the 7th ranked Michigan State Spartans, a different Syracuse squad showed up. And that squad was damn good. As in, a 72-58 win over the number 7 team in the country good.
  • Michigan State – Syracuse Postgame Reactions OR Down Goes Sparty. Again., Orange:44: Easily the biggest test to date, Syracuse had barely been doing what was necessary to win. Offense is the big mystery as Syracuse has disappeared for large portions this season. And yes, they did a bit on the floor of Madison Square Garden. But in the end this was a huge win and Syracuse did it by bringing the ball inside. Sorry Sparty. That’s four in a row for the Orange.
  • Rick Jackson and Scoop Jardine Lead Cuse Past Michigan State, The Cuse Connection: It was a great night inside Madison Square Garden last night. With college basketball’s biggest stage and Jim Valvano’s legacy providing the backdrop, #7/#8 Syracuse took down the #8/#7 Michigan State Spartans 72-58 in front of a sell out Garden crowd of 19,391, many of whom were draped in Orange.
  • We Were all Wrong, Cuse Country: Nobody among us really gave SU much of a chance. Sure we had hopes, aspirations. “Maybe if someone gets hot from the outside…” and so forth. And we all know that SU historically plays their best against top opponents, ones who elicit maximum effort and focus from Boeheim’s teams. But we who have watched every minute of every game this season, who saw SU a couple inches away from a home loss to William & Mary, who saw them struggling to put away Detroit (let alone NC State or Michigan), while also watching Michigan State give Duke all they could handle at Cameron last week, had little to no optimism about tonight’s game.
